Enrichment Week
Beech class went to China for Enrichment Week!
We had such a busy and fabulous week! When we arrived at School on Monday morning the classroom had been transformed into an airport! We discovered from Mrs Morris' clues that we were travelling to the City of Shanghai in China. We studied maps and learned lots of interesting facts about the Geography and History of China.
We created our very own Terracotta Army, made healthy vegetable fried rice and learned how to use chopsticks. We did the Shuffle dance in PE and wrote Chinese characters for numbers to 10. We even constructed our own versions of the Great Wall of China and The Forbidden City!

Outdoor Learning Day
Our day started with English, learning about compound words. We had work in small groups to hunt for all of the root words around the playground. We then tried to make compound words by adding them together. We loved this activity and found lots of compound words.
After break we went on a lovely walk to look at some new and old houses for our history lesson. We found a post box so we posted our letters to Kieran!
Finally, for our science topic on plants we collected data on which wild plants we could identify and studied different trees and their leaf shapes.
Back at school for Maths we made human number lines by wearing number stickers!
What a busy day! We were...exhausted!
Street Detectives
We have been very busy this term! In Maths we have been learning to count to 100 forwards and backwards by making, comparing and ordering 2 digit numbers. In Art we have been learning about the artists Lowry and Van Gogh. We have been learning about Bognor Regis and Butlins in our Geography and History lessons and have been learning to write letters and postcards in English with the help of Paddington Bear and The Jolly Postman. Science Day
On Science Day we learned all about the human body and our 5 senses. We labelled parts of the body and played a labelling game in PE. We used our information technology skills to make a collage of our faces and added labels to the body parts associated with each sense. We played the zoom in zoom out game exploring our sight. we had to guess what the objects were when zoomed in close. To end the day, Mrs Morris gave us some bitter lemons to try!

Maths Week
We've had a brilliant week of Minion Measures in Year 1.
We began the week with a mission to help Stuart the Minion measure the distance across a river. We used cubes, Numicon Shapes and other classroom items and recorded our results in a table.
Next we compared the weight of our Autumn collection of pumpkins and 'Alien' gourds and ordered objects by size and weight. We moved on to measuring capacity learning the terms 'full' and 'empty' and finally we learnt how to tell the time to the hour using o'clock.

Did anyone see lights in the sky last night? These strange alien pumpkins landed at school! Where did they come from? They inspired us to create some amazing art and independent writing.

We arrived at school to find our classroom in such a mess! We had to do some investigating to find out who had been in our room. Do you know who it was?

Here is a range of quality books recommended for Year 1 pupils to listen to and enjoy with family at home. It is important that while learning to read, children are read to daily. They need to see reading as a daily activity, listen to someone else read and be given opportunities to join in. We hope that you can support your child by doing this daily as we do in school.
