Elm Class

Welcome to the Elm Class page!
We are really looking forward to the exciting year of learning and exploring ahead. Please keep checking our class page where you will find lots of examples of our learning.

Summer 2
This term our topic is 'Ocean Explorers'. We will be looking at sea creatures, beaches and pirates. We are excited for our final fun-filled topic in Reception.
Sports Day 2022
We had a lot of fun at our first Sports Day and loved all our grown ups and families were able to come and support us. We took part in balance the quoit on our head, a team relay race and a sprint.

Enrichment Week
During Enrichment Week, we have been learning about Queen Elizabeth II. We looked back at Queen Elizabeth's early life, learnt about the royal family and the different decades during her reign.
Summer 1
Our topic this half term is 'All Creatures Great and Small'. We will be learning about minibeasts and farm animals. We are very lucky to have visit from Zoolab and visit a local farm.
This half term we have had some special visitors in our classroom. We have been watching the life cycle of a butterfly. Over the half term we have watched the caterpillars eat lots of food, build themselves a chrysalis and then slowly spread their wings and turn into butterflies.
We loved our visit from ZooLab. We learnt about lots of different minibeasts. We were extremely brave and got to touch the minibeasts.
We had lots of fun visiting Aldingbourne Country Centre. We explored the farm and met many different animals. We got to stroke the goats and feed the alpacas. We also went on a minibeast hunt in the woods.
We started the half term with an 'Active Maths Day'. We were focusing on our addition and subtraction skills through lots of games in our outdoor area. We began by going on a number sentence hunt. We found different number sentences outside and worked with a partner to solve them.
We each had a number card from 1 to 10. We ordered our number cards and then matched the numeral to the correct Numicon Shape.
We also practiced our number bonds to 10. We found someone who had the missing part and shared our number sentence with the class.
Spring 2
Our topic this half term is 'Once Upon a Time' and we will be focusing on lots of different traditional tales - The Gingerbread Man, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We will also be looking at how some authors have adapted a classic traditional tale to make an alternative story.
We explored the book 'The Gingerbread Man' and then made our own. We weighed out the different ingredients and mixed them altogether. We carefully placed our gingerbread biscuits onto a baking tray, and made sure they did not jump out the oven. They were delicious!!
Book Week 2022
For Book Week this year we focused on the book 'Stuart Little'. On Tuesday we came into the class to find Stuart Little had left us a note and his story book to read.
We had lots of fun creating a bedroom for Stuart using junk modelling materials. Stuart visited some of our bedrooms and thought the beds were very comfy!
We also created a sock puppet of Stuart Little using lots of different materials.
Spring 1
Our topic this half term is 'Reach for the Stars'. We will be learning about Space through lots of stories and non-fiction books.
Elm Class really enjoyed dressing up as Kings and Queens for the day. We thought about what we would do if we were a King or Queen for a day. We learnt lots about the Queen and her family.
In PE this half term we have been focusing on gymnastics. We have learnt the 9 core fundamental gymnastic shapes. We have creatively thought how we can perform theses shapes on different apparatus.
During Science Week we have been thinking about how to stay healthy. We have looked at different exercises to keep fit, what foods we should be eating and keeping ourselves clean.
Autumn 2
Our topic this half term is 'People Who Help Us'. We will be learning about our local environment and lots of different job occupations.
We had lots of fun when the fire service came to visit us. We explored the different pieces of equipment on the fire engine and learnt how to keep ourselves safe from flames.
During Maths Week we have been exploring mathematical language to describe the length of different objects. We drew round ourselves and measured how long we were using non-standard unit of measures.
Autumn 1
Our topic this half term is 'Marvellous Me'. During the term we will be focusing on discussing what makes us unique, identifying different parts of the body and exploring our senses.
We have had lots of fun getting to know our new friends in Elm Class and exploring our new learning environments.
