Reading at Bartons
Reading @ Bartons 21/22
The book lists created for the children last year went down a storm. So here is a selection of books to meet all abilities and reading tastes. The books this year have been updated to include texts from a diverse range of authors and include a diverse range of main characters.
Feel free to browse books from other lists if you wish. You will be sure to find some excellent choices from a range of authors!
Schools Library Service
Each term we work with the West Sussex library service to refresh a range of books in our school library.
We receive 100 books aimed at all children across the school including; picture books, non-fiction and fiction text types.
These books are located at the entrance of the library in the book boxes by the tables. Feel free to browse the selection and take one to read alongside your AR book.

Reading Skills Cards
We have introduced a new set of Reading Skills cards, which focus on the curriculum objectives for KS1 and KS2. We have now updated these and include a new set of skills cards for Year R.
Please use them when reading with your children: ask them questions and get them to discuss their book with you! This will improve their understanding but also promote a love of reading.
Reading Skills cards are linked below:
At Bartons we follow the Read Write Inc. scheme for early reading. Every child from Y1-Y3 will work in a small group matched to their current phonics assessment. This allows a personalised approach to phonics teaching. Each child will also take home a fully decodable reading book and a sharing book.
Please click on the video below to hear the sounds your children will learn.
Accelerated Reader
When we are ready we get to take a STAR test which tells us which books we can choose from the library. After we have read it, we can take a quiz on it where we have to try and score over 80% to show we understood the book.
We know that many children like to read their favourite books from home and lots of these books are already on Accelerated Reader. It is so important for children to develop a love of reading, therefore if a book from home is within their ZPD level, then of course your child can read this as their school book. You can look up a book to see what level it is (and how many words the book has) at this website: www.arbookfind.co.uk
