Welcome to Ash Class
At the start of another school year, we are looking forward to all the new learning we have planned. As we move from Year 3 into 4 we will build on our previous learning in Maths and English whilst enjoying some new topics in geography, history and science.
Please keep an eye out each term for the newsletters, where you can find more details on the work we will be doing.
I am really looking forward to working with this class again and seeing everyone develop their skills and find new interests as they experience the topics we have planned.

Maths Week
During maths week, Ash Class participated in a variety of maths challenges linked to our Crystal Maze theme for the week.
We looked at maths from ancient civilisations of India, China, Greece and Egypt.
We learnt about hieroglyphs and also the way numbers were written in other parts of the world. We did shape patterns, making shapes from nets and other collaborative tasks.
It was very exciting collecting the crystals for our teams as we worked with our friends.
African sunset lanterns
We recycled plastic and glass bottles and jars to make our lanterns.
In our sketchbooks we explored layering colours and drawing animals in silhouette.
Our lanterns looked amazing in the dark!
In DT we linked our art and recycling knowledge to create lanterns with an African theme.

We used our colour knowledge and work from our sketchbooks to layer colours for our sunsets.

Paul Sturgess
We really enjoyed our visit from Paul Sturgess and took on all the challenges with great enthusiasm!
Science Week in Ash Class
We spent the week studying the digestive system. We used a number of ways to demonstrate how food passes through our bodies. We shared our knowledge with everyone at the science fair.
Alison Wright's visit
Following an interesting talk by Alison, we tried to write using our feet, like she did. It was a lot more tricky than we thought it would be!
Wellbeing Activity
We worked with the Wellbeing Champions to talk about emotions and how we feel at different times.
Using pictures, we were able to communicate how we were feeling.
Chinese New Year Dance Workshop
Here are some of the moves we learnt as we put together the dance to tell the story of The Great Race.
It was amazing how it all came together so we could perform it at the end of the session.
Creative Arts Week in Ash Class
We learnt lots of new techniques to create 3D masks and models.
Look out for more pieces connected to our next topic!
Following the INSET day on Monday , where the teachers worked with Darrell Wakelam , we spent the week making masks and models using card, paper
1/10

Book Week 2025
We had a fun-filled day dressed as our favourite comic strip characters. We wrote and illustrated our own cartoons as well as making flip books to create moving images. We learnt a lot from the author Steve Webb who showed us how to draw some of his characters.
Portsmouth Historic Dockyard
We went to Portsmouth to learn more about Tudor life, Henry VIII and the Mary Rose.
We enjoyed watching a 4D film showing us how the ship was recovered from the bottom of the sea. Our guide talked to us and showed us artefacts from the ship which were very interesting.
We enjoyed finding out about all the jobs which had to be done on board the ship too.
