Here you will be able to find the Year 5 curriculum overview and our termly newsletters.

I have also included a list of 50 highly recommended books that the children should look to explore over the course of the year.

Lime Class: Key Information

PE

Our PE days are Tuesdays and Fridays and children are expected to take part in all PE lessons. They should come to school in the correct PE kit on these days.

Water Bottles

Please make sure your child comes to school with a named water bottle.

Homework

At Bartons, we believe that education is a life-long process.  A child’s education does not cease when they leave our school premises; learning at home is an essential part of good education.

Home Learning is any work or activity completed outside lesson time, either alone, with parents, or others. Home Learning makes an important contribution to progress at school. It is used to enhance and support the pupils’ learning within school and also to prepare them for secondary school.

For Lime Class, homework will be set via Seesaw on a Thursday and unless specified, will be due in the following Wednesday. Your child should upload their homework to Seesaw by this day. Additionally, Children are expected to read either to an adult at home or to themselves for at least 15 minutes a day. Their reading record should be signed every time they read so that we can keep track at school. If your child reads competently to themselves, ask them some questions about the book so that you can see if they have understood what they have read. Discussing different texts with your children will help them to develop their own love of reading.

It is also expected that every member of Lime Class carries out one of the following homework activities per half-term:

Working With Others (WWO)

During our first week in Lime Class, we carried out a number of WWO activities. The skills required to carry out these activities equip the children with the necessary social skills to work together which enhances their well-being and ability to learn in the classroom.

The children in Lime Class worked brilliantly together and managed to solve every problem that they faced!
Maths Investigation Day

During our Maths Investigation Day, Lime Class explored the fascinating world of Roman numerals. The children discovered how numbers were written in ancient Rome and compared them to our modern number system. Through puzzles, problem-solving activities and creative challenges, they learned to read, write, and use Roman numerals in fun and practical ways. The day not only strengthened their mathematical thinking but also gave them a glimpse into history, showing how maths connects across time and cultures.
Maths Week

Lime Class had a fantastic time during Maths Week as they explored fractions in a fun and engaging way. The children practised comparing fractions, learned how to add and subtract them with confidence, and even worked on finding fractions of different amounts. Through hands-on activities and problem-solving challenges, they strengthened their understanding and enjoyed seeing how fractions are used in everyday life.
Anti-Bullying Week

During Anti-Bullying Week, the school’s Wellbeing Champions led an inspiring workshop for the each class, helping everyone understand the importance of kindness, respect and standing up for others. Through thoughtful discussions and interactive activities, the children in Lime Class learned practical ways to support one another and create a safe, inclusive environment. The workshop encouraged pupils to reflect on their actions and reminded them that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
Visit from West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service

Lime Class were thrilled to welcome the West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service for an exciting and informative visit. The children learned all about the role of a firefighter, explored key fire-safety messages and even had the chance to explore a fire engine. The firefighters were incredibly impressed by the children’s fantastic knowledge of fire safety and their excellent scientific questioning. It was a memorable experience that inspired curiosity and reinforced the importance of staying safe.
Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium

Lime Class had a fantastic trip to Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium as part of our Science topic on Space. The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in an exciting workshop where they learned about the James Webb Space Telescope and its incredible discoveries. During the Planetarium show, they explored constellations and learned more about the Solar System, sparking lots of curiosity and thoughtful questions. The class also had time to explore the interactive exhibits around the Science Centre, making it a fun, engaging and memorable learning experience for everyone.
Science Week

During Science Week, Lime Class had an exciting time exploring the topic of forces through a range of hands-on and creative activities. We began by learning about gravity, where the children researched the life and achievements of Sir Isaac Newton and wrote their own biographies about him. We then investigated air resistance by designing and creating our own parachutes, testing how different shapes and materials affected the amount of air resistance present. Finally, we explored friction by observing how different surfaces changed the movement of a toy car, helping the children understand how forces affect everyday objects.
Creative Arts Day

During Creative Arts Day, Lime Class worked closely alongside the children in Year 2 to create some detailed world maps. Drawing on the skills they developed during Darrell Wakelam’s visit last year, the children showed great creativity and confidence in their work. It was wonderful to see them collaborating, sharing ideas and applying their knowledge to produce such impressive maps. The children in both classes displayed some wonderful Geography knowledge!

Book Week

Throughout Book Week, the children had a fantastic time exploring poetry through a fun rollercoaster theme, linking our whole-school focus on poetry and our class topic (forces) together. The children used their knowledge of figurative language to create exciting and imaginative poems full of vivid descriptions. The children also had the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents by producing a final published piece, with many choosing to present their work through painting. A highlight of the week was World Book Day, where the children took part in a range of engaging activities while proudly wearing their creative adjective costumes.

Digital Skills for Life Workshop

The children in Lime Class recently took part in a Digital Skills for Life workshop. The workshop focused on how we can keep safe online, equipping the children with relevant knowledge that will apply throughout their lives. The children discussed the repercussions of their online actions and carried out some roleplay to highlight how significantly people can be impacted by online bullying. The children were able to give some excellent suggestions about how they would deal with such situations if it were happening to them or if they could see it happening to somebody else. Great work Lime Class!
